Understanding cancellation

Cancelling a GST registration ends your obligation to charge tax and file regular returns. It can happen because you ask for it, or because a tax officer starts the process after finding non-compliance. If the officer’s cancellation was unjustified or you can now comply, a revocation request can bring the registration back.

You can apply when…

  • The business has closed or stopped operating
  • The business is sold, merged, demerged or otherwise transferred
  • The legal form changes in a way that changes the PAN
  • Turnover falls below the registration limit
  • The sole proprietor has died
  • A voluntary registrant never started business within six months

An officer may cancel when…

  • Returns are not filed for the stipulated continuous period
  • Invoices are raised without real supply, or credit is claimed falsely
  • Registration was obtained through misstatement
  • No business is found at the declared address
  • Other provisions of GST law are violated

How cancellation works

  1. Clear pending returnsAll due returns must be filed and dues paid before the application will be accepted.
  2. Apply on the portalSubmit the cancellation form with the reason and effective date.
  3. Officer reviewThe officer may seek clarification and, if satisfied, issues a cancellation order, normally within 30 days.
  4. File the final returnGSTR-10 is due within three months of the order or the date of cancellation, whichever is later.
  5. Settle credit on stockInput credit on remaining stock and capital goods generally has to be paid back or reversed.
If the officer starts the process, you first receive a show-cause notice. Reply in time with supporting documents so the proceeding can be dropped.

Common questions

No. Pending returns and liabilities block the application.

What happens if I ignore a notice?

The officer may cancel without hearing your side. Always respond within the date given.

Can I register again later?

Yes, you can apply for a fresh registration if you resume business.

Do I owe anything after cancellation?

Possibly tax on unsold stock credit and any earlier dues, which the final return captures.
