What GST registration means

When you register under the Goods and Services Tax, the government assigns you a 15-character GSTIN. That number is what lets you charge GST on invoices, pass on tax credits and file returns. GST replaced a patchwork of earlier levies such as VAT, excise and service tax with one tax charged at every stage of the supply chain.

Who has to register

  • Goods suppliers once yearly turnover passes ₹40 lakh in most states (₹20 lakh in special category states)
  • Service providers beyond ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states)
  • Anyone making supplies from one state to another
  • Sellers who sell through e-commerce platforms
  • Casual and non-resident taxable persons, reverse-charge payers, input service distributors and online service suppliers from abroad

Why some register by choice

  • Claim credit for GST paid on purchases
  • Look credible to larger buyers and marketplaces
  • Bid for tenders and sell across state lines
  • Carry forward unused credit from the older tax regime
  • Strengthen your profile for loans and leases
Special category states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand have lower limits. Confirm the current figure for your state.
